If you think you may need to go to A&E but it’s not life-threatening, or if you’re too unwell to wait until the GP practice opens, you can call NHS 24 on 111—free of charge, 24 hours a day.

NHS 24 will help you get the right care in the right place, which may be closer to home and might avoid the need to attend A&E.

Before calling to book a GP appointment

Please consider visiting your local pharmacy first.
Pharmacists are highly trained experts in medicine and can help with a wide range of minor illnesses, including:

  • Coughs, sore throats, blocked/runny noses
  • Mouth ulcers, cold sores, headaches, backache
  • Hay fever, allergies, eczema, skin rashes
  • Period pain, constipation, indigestion, diarrhoea
  • Cystitis (in women), threadworms, warts, verrucas

You don't need an appointment, and if the pharmacist feels you need to see a GP, they’ll advise you or refer you directly.
This helps free up appointments for patients who need them most.

Non-urgent advice: Important Note for Dental or Eye Problems

  • Dental Issues: If you have a dental concern—such as tooth pain or gum problems—please contact your dentist directly.
  • Eye Problems: For concerns like eye pain, infections, or sudden changes in vision, consult an optician first; they’re equipped to assess and treat a range of eye conditions.
