Minor Injuries: What You Need to Know

We’re Not a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) or A&E

  • Eastfield Medical Practice can help with some minor injuries, but we have limited facilities.
  • We do not offer walk-in services for injuries.
  • For urgent or serious injuries, visit A&E or call 999 immediately.

MIA

Use the MIA (Minor Injury Assessment) Service

The quickest way to get help for minor injuries is through the NHS Lothian MIA service:

  1. Call 111 to discuss your injury and book an appointment.
  2. You may get a video consultation or a face-to-face appointment at a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU).

MIA can help with recent (within the last 7 days), traumatic injuries such as:

  • Strains and sprains
  • Suspected broken bones
  • Wounds and minor burns
  • Minor bumps to the head or face
  • Simple eye injuries
  • Insect bites and stings

Please note: MIA isn’t for injuries older than 7 days or non-traumatic problems (like longstanding joint pain).

When to Call Eastfield Medical Practice

  • If you’re not sure what to do, or you think we might help, please call our reception who will help.
  • The receptionist will speak with our Practice Nurse or Duty Doctor and advise you on:
      1. Arranging an appointment with us (if appropriate).
      2. Calling MIA at 111.
      3. Heading to A&E or calling 999 for more serious issues.

Key Reminders

  • Do not walk in to our surgery with a minor injury without contacting us first.
  • Use MIA (111) for most recent, traumatic minor injuries.
  • Go to A&E or call 999 for serious or life-threatening situations.
  • If you have any questions, phone us and we’ll help guide you.

Thank you for helping us ensure you receive the right care in the right place.
