How to check your test results

To check your tests results, call 01968 675 576 and press option 2.

Our result line is open between 10am - 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Non-urgent advice: Different tests take different lengths of time to come back.

As a general guide:

Type of test Usual timescale
Blood tests Around 5–7 working days
Urine tests and swabs Around 5–7 working days
Stool samples Around 7–10 working days
X-rays and scans Often 10 working days or longer
Specialist tests May take several weeks
Smear results Are posted and may take several weeks

These timescales are only a guide. Some results may take longer depending on the type of test, the laboratory, and whether specialist reporting is required.

Confidentiality and children’s results

We can usually only give test results to the patient they relate to. Parents and carers do not automatically have a right to receive a child or young person’s results.

In Scotland, children and young people may have their own rights to confidentiality, depending on their age, understanding and circumstances. If a child or young person is able to understand their healthcare and make decisions about sharing information, we may need their consent before giving information to a parent or carer.

Reception staff may need to check with a clinician before giving out results for children or young people.
