We can usually only give test results to the patient they relate to. Parents and carers do not automatically have a right to receive a child or young person’s results.
In Scotland, children and young people may have their own rights to confidentiality, depending on their age, understanding and circumstances. If a child or young person is able to understand their healthcare and make decisions about sharing information, we may need their consent before giving information to a parent or carer.
Reception staff may need to check with a clinician before giving out results for children or young people.
